‘Renegade’ by Christine Donaldson

Subject: Christine Donaldson
Filmers: Abe Kislevitz
Location: Mammoth Mountain, CA
Music: Christine Donaldson - "Renegade"

Early last year Christine Donaldson wrote and recorded this song “Renegade.” For anyone that hears this song, it definitely is one that sticks in your mind and paints a beautiful picture of escape and rebellious love. I felt like it would be a great first of several music videos to help get Christine’s awesome voice and talent out into the wild. We filmed this last Winter and Spring in Mammoth Lakes, CA over a few days.

On the technical side I used a 5D Mark II for all of the filming.  The wide lens was a Canon 16-35mm F2.8 in combination with a Glidecam HD 2000.  For some of the closer shots I used a Canon 50mm F1.4.  The entire video was shot at 1080P 24FPS to get a filmy look.  When doing the snowy shots I realized afterwards that a fast shutter speed and super shallow depth of field gave the most optimal shots.  When the snow was crispy and defined it looked the best.  This was my first real test using a DSLR for video so my focus skills aren’t great; however the 16-35 combined with the full-frame sensor of the 5D gives pretty rad results regardless of how well it’s focused.  I was really happy with the way the light and flares came through in the sunset forest section – pretty magical light.

I did the editing in Premiere Pro CS6 to save time on transcoding.  Everything was edited natively straight from the camera.  Once the cut was finished I shot it over to Davinci’s Resolve to do the coloring.  Most of the color out of the 5D was pretty solid but I used Resolve for more of a stylistic look which I didn’t quite pull off as well as I wanted.  Practice practice practice!

Look out for more videos of Christine in the future.  She just recorded some new songs that are absolutely stunning – I have no doubts that she’ll make it big sometime soon.

do you shoot flat on the 5d abe? if so, how have you found colour correction/grading in resolve with the flat footage?

I didn’t shoot this one flat – I used the faithful picture style which is no sharpening, minimal color boost, etc. I have figured out the cinestyle workflow in resolve, check my post from my ‘The Weekend’ video here on the website.

      great song btw!

Super awesome job, Abe! Very professionally looking and big ups for doing well with the DSLR first time around. All that practice with the GoPro clearly translated over to your ability with the DSLR :)

Quick question – do you color using a color calibrated monitor or do you just use the standard Mac colors? If so, what kind of calibrator do you use (i.e. Pantone Huey, X-Rite, etc.)?

Thanks again Abe, you’re a true inspiration!!

Thanks man! I haven’t used a color calibrator for my stuff, nope. It’s not ideal and we are working on getting a proper color setup in our edit bay at the GoPro office.

Abe, this dslr video is really good! Do you think you will be making any skiing video’s in this style?

  • JohnK

What stand are you using in the video? Steady cam perhaps?? Especially when you are going through the trees!?!
