GoPro Instagram Q+A

goproqacover

On October 22nd, 2015 Chris Farro & I took over the GoPro Instagram page to let people ask us questions about GoPro Awards, USC, and our experience with GoPro! I’ve archived all of the questions we were able to answer during that hour below. There were a total of 2,665 comments so we didn’t quite get to them all. If you have additional questions, feel free to ask them in the comments below! Thanks for joining us in the chat and be sure to follow us both on Instagram! @abekislevitz & @chrisfarro

    • It’s that time! @abekislevitz and @chrisfarro here to answer all your questions. Bring your best for a chance to win a #HERO4Session. #GoPro
    • gabrielleouellette How many pictures do you take before you get The shot?
    • gopro When I am taking photos, I usually utilize .5 second Time Lapse mode or 30/6 Burst mode. I usually just want that ONE photo from the session to tell the story of the experience. Sometimes, I’ll only post 1-3 photos from a long multi-week production. So to answer your question, it can be 1000s for THE shot.
      @chrisfarro
    • gopro@gabrielleouellette I will usually take a ton of photos! Probably 2,000 will get you at least one epic shot!
      @abekislevitz
    • greene_eggsandham What programs do you recommend for editing?
    • goproFor photos, I typically bring them into Adobe Bridge and then sometimes from there into Photoshop”. For videos, GoPro Studio is an awesome and easy solution for quick videos. For longer projects, I use Adobe Premiere.
      @chrisfarro
    • maxeytaxi How is photo of the day chosen?
    • goprophoto of the day is chosen by a group of people on the social team. They see all of the photos and pick anything engaging and unique! For Indiana, I would say there are plenty of opportunities to be a great story teller. Start with that, and see where it takes you!
      @abekislevitz
    • bgrogan06What’s a photo you’ve wanted to get but haven’t yet?
    • gopro I’ve always wanted to get that perfect barrel photo while surfing. Its so challenging to even get barreled in the first place that getting the perfect photo of it has eluded me. I’ve had a couple very memorable waves at Ocean Beach that I either didn’t have a camera on my board that day or didn’t get to the record button in time (it’s spicy out there when it’s big). I really really want to get that epic barrel selfie from the board but also the handheld looking out of the barrel. It’s gonna happen! If you’re wondering what type of shot I’m talking about, look @anthony_walsh_ ! The guy is a barrel monster!!! 👍
      @chrisfarro
    • vinhtran__ What is the highlight of working at GoPro?

goproTons of things are awesome at GoPro, shredding and traveling with our friends is definitely the highlight, but for me I also love technology so getting my hands on early tech is super cool!
@abekislevitz

  • richmao What are the benefits of the HERO4 Session?
  • gopro3 things! Waterproof, small, and the battery lasts forever! I keep that thing on me at all times!
    @abekislevitz
  • carkuno How does it feel to go from making YouTube videos as a college kid at SC with the ski team and now finally being able to do all the work you did with GoPro? How did it happen? @chrisfarro @abekislevitz
  • goproit’s been an amazing ride going from making videos at #USC to now #GoPro .Lots of hard work, but simply following our passions! Ultimately it feels like the natural progression of what we were already doing, just bigger and better things with all the same good friends!
    @abekislevitz
  • jennaennnaI’m from Hawaii!!!! How do you capture the best motion picture?!?! 🏂🏂🏂🎿🎿📷📷📷📷📷📷
  • goproHello Hawaii!!!! Make sure you have those anti-fogs in the case, or just use the HERO4 Session!
    @chrisfarro
  • luke_mallon19 abe who’s the better twin? @abekislevitz @chrisfarro
  • gopro @calebfarro is definitely nicer, but @chrisfarro is better looking and better at sports 😉
    @abekislevitz
  • goprohahahaha @calebfarro is definitely better at getting extension
    @chrisfarro
  • fulksI know lowering the Frame rate in low light helps with the quality (lighting/grain). But does filming at 2.7k 30FPS look much better than 2.7k 60FPS. And do you recommend lowering the frame rate if there is no plan for using SlowMo?
  • goproif it’s lowlight, it will look significantly better (if you have an eye for quality). Otherwise it’s not a huuuge deal
    @abekislevitz
  • blakebretonHow do you stay motivated?
  • goproLiving life to the fullest takes effort and passion! Wake up early, don’t hit the snooze button (more than once), and if you are ever questioning whether you should do something that day, don’t! Get out there and do it! Never have I regretted surfing that blown-out day, or skiing in bad conditions.
    @chrisfarro
  • ortizolaveHow can I get chosen for GoPro Awards – I only have a HERO2
  • goprothe people that get the GoPro Awards will be those who are either pushing themselves as story tellers with engaging stories, or showing us your passions in a way we haven’t seen before. It’s entirely possible for you do that even with a HERO2 – all you need is a camera and a good story! Get to it!
    @abekislevitz
  • jameshustlerWe will be seeing much more spherical content from GoPro and their athletes?
  • goproYou bet you will see more spherical content in the future. We plan on leading the category!!
    @chrisfarro
  • mbeckeroneHow hard is it to read all these comments?
  • goprowe got this in the bag!
    @abekislevitz
  • bransonbowlerwhat’s the most fun you have had in Utah!?
  • goproThe most fun I have had in Utah was on the HERO4 Session Production for rock climbing. With minimal climbing experience, I had to repel down 450′ off the top of a 1400′ wall to film @sashadigiulian as she crushed the top of the route. It was so scary just dangling there and knowing the consequences if I were to drop anything from my camera kit!
    @chrisfarro
  • synthsrule1What kinda of photos would be better to submit for #GoProAwards? POV of landscape or just landscape?
  • goprosounds like POV of a landscape would be more engaging! Try it!
    @abekislevitz
  • josuemgphotoHey guys I know you travel a lot , and it opens your mind , what do you think it´s the difference between you (the gopro guys) and we the customers , we spend hours in front of our phones watching your awesome content .I thinks there´s something we are missing…
  • goproGood question! It doesn’t have to be an exotic place or crazy adventure to get that amazing GoPro shot. A huge portion of the content we post is from our customers doing normal things but capturing it in a unique and immersive way! Use your camera more often and I think you will be happy with the results!
    @chrisfarro
  • icollectmapsWho inspires you as photographers? And who would you like to strap a GoPro to for a day? Besides Superman, of course.
  • goprothere are a ton of photographers on Instagram that I follow and look up to! @travisburkephotography has amazing adventures!
    @abekislevitz
  • jameshustlerI recently won your creators challenge which was awesome and you guys kindly put me on the new awards site. In future will GoPro awards winners be re-uploaded by ‘GoPro original productions’ or will content be featured from, and remain on users channels?
  • gopropotentially both – ultimately Awards winners will be content that GoPro uploads to our own channel to share out to more people! We’ll definitely link back to all of your channels
    @abekislevitz
  • bransonbowlerhere’s a new idea! Y’all should share your best pow day playlist with us! What do ya think??
  • gopro I don’t ride with music! My pre-shred jams are ruled by @taylorswift!
    @chrisfarro
  • joshua_budneyWhat you both do is such an awesome sport. One day I hope to do the same. When you were younger, was it intimidating at first? Was there ever a time when you were discouraged from it?
  • goproGrowing up skiing you definitely have your moments of butterflies. Injuries are discouraging but nowadays there’s so many ways to practice on trampolines and foam pits! Find a good pow day!
    @abekislevitz
  • icollectmaps
    Thanks for answering our questions, @abekislevitz and @chrisfarro. You guys are awesome.
  • goprono worries! Thanks for joining!
    @abekislevitz
  • anthonysricewhat are your morning rituals or morning routines look like?
  • goproI don’t meditate but I do try and hit the gym or surf in the morning before work. That way i’m energized for the whole rest of the day!!
    @chrisfarro
  • charlie_oestreicherSo…do u think u boyz could take me In a game of horse in the park?
  • goprohaha no way, we can only do selfies and backflips 😛
    @abekislevitz
  • bencarey21Hey @chrisfarro I’m a twin as well, what your favorite and least favorite part of working with your brother???
  • gopro Great question! I get along really well with my little twin bro @calebfarro! he’s actually on a production right now in Bermuda and I can’t wait for him to come back; i need my surf buddy! My least favorite part of working with him is when he gets sent on cool productions and I get left behind!
    @chrisfarro
  • _teocolomboany advice about how to win gopro awards?? @calebfarro @abekislevitz
  • goprowhen I’m looking through entries to pick a winner I’m looking for content that’s really unique or high quality. It’s going to be rare that we choose a music video-type highlight. Raw clips are good and easy for us, and if you do an edit – tell a good story and make something engaging!
    @abekislevitz
  • mikehofffffWhat is the first step i should take if I want to work for gopro or become an intern?
  • goproBe a creative content creator! Nearly everyone hired on the Media Team is an avid user of their GoPro before they come to GoPro. It’s much easier to get your foot in the door if you have a deep portfolio of GoPro content!
    @chrisfarro
  • ronnelsDo you think El Niño will bring food snow to Tahoe this year?
  • goproI do think we’ll get snow – but I’m concerned that the air might be too warm…. we’ll see!
    @abekislevitz
  • katiebabineau I’ve been dying to strap a GoPro on my pup, @lolalikesnuggles, but she’s only 9 lbs 😱 What mount do you recommend???
  • goprosticky mount
    @abekislevitz
  • adrianharyanaWhat would be the first thing you would do if you became the CEO of the amazing brand @GoPro?
  • goproIf I was CEO I’d call up Nick Woodman and ask for help!! He does an amazing job of inspiring everyone on the vision here at @GoPro – Not sure I’d change much about what we have going on! Maybe give myself a raise! ;P
    @abekislevitz
  • _teocolomboGUS outing ! What you think about this awesome guy??
  • gopro@guskenworthy is THE man. In my opinion, he’s the best overall freestyle skier on the planet; dude shreds pipe, big-air AND slope. I’m glad Gus made his announcement so he can live an open life! I’ll always be a Gus fan, friend and supporter!!
    @chrisfarro
  • kyleohlsonHow do I turn on my GoPro?!
  • goproSlowly!
    @chrisfarro
  • brettroberts8What’s your favorite to shoot, videos or photos?
  • goprophotos are instantly gratifying, but I’m always way more stoked when I look back on old video and see that I captured some amazing experiences.
    @abekislevitz
  • stephanie_rudy@abekislevitz @chrisfarro hi 🙋 is there anyway to reduce the fish-eye effect of the cam in post processing…?? Or settings…?
  • goprofor photos there’s a lens correction in Lightroom! I use it all the time!
    @abekislevitz
  • goproHi! The best way to reduce the fish-eye effect in video is to shoot in a Narrow or Medium field of vier (FOW), accessible via the settings menu. For editing, you can use Andy’s Elastic (free) for correcting fish-eye, or Adaptive Wide Angle filter in Photoshop!
    @chrisfarro
  • thisisyouthAs a professional athlete, how do you thread the line between enjoying your experiences and making sure they’re well-documented?? I feel like this is a problem for everyone today— amateurs may even have it worse than the pros, with social media FOMO, etc. how do you manage it??
  • goprogood question – thankfully I was never a professional athlete – so for me filmmaking has always been part of the experience. There’s some days where I just need to shred and don’t bring cameras along!
